Quick Answer: Hummingbirds don’t nest in birdhouses. According to the International Hummingbird Society, they “are not cavity nesters,” and every hummingbird nest is an open cup about 1.5 to 2 inches across, built on top of a branch. The wooden “hummingbird houses” sold on Amazon for $9-$21 are 2-inch-wide boxes with a roughly 1-inch hole, too small for the wrens and chickadees that hole would fit, so treat them as decoration. If you want hummingbirds nesting near you, put out nesting material such as Songbird Essentials’ Hummer Helper ($15.99), which the Hummingbird Society recommends by name, keep a nectar feeder and perch nearby, and leave downy plants and spider webs in the yard.

“Hummingbird house” is one of the most searched hummingbird products, and Amazon is full of them: small wooden boxes with red ribbons, mushroom-shaped huts, and hand-woven grass balls. Some listings promise that hummingbirds will “build their nests” inside. They won’t, and a few of the sellers admit as much in the fine print. Below is what these houses actually are, what a real hummingbird nest looks like, and what to buy instead if you want to help hummingbirds raise young in your yard.

Hummingbird nests by the numbers

What the “hummingbird houses” on Amazon actually are

We pulled the top hummingbird house listings from Amazon’s catalog on October 30, 2026. The wooden ones share nearly identical dimensions across brands.

ListingPriceListed sizeEntranceWhat the listing says
NOVWANG 4 Pcs Solid Wood Hummingbird House$16.99 (4)4.8 x 1.9 in1.06 inCalls the size "scientific and reasonable"; no species data
Fitraho Small Hummingbird House$19.995.12 x 1.96 in1.06 inHummingbirds "may not always nest inside"; also lists House Wren, Bewick's Wren, chickadees
BESWORLDS 3 Pcs Wooden Hummingbird House$20.89 (3)About 5.3 x 2 in1.1 in"There's no guarantee they'll use this decorative house"
Tfwadmx Hand Woven Grass Bird Hut (3-pack)$19.99 (3)About 9 x 4 inNot listedSold as a "roosting pocket" for wrens, sparrows, finches, chickadees
WDEFUN Hand Woven Hummingbird Nest (2-pack)$8.99 (2)Not listedNot listed"Charming and decorative design"

The wooden houses are the most misleading. A 1.06-inch hole is a wren or chickadee doorway, but the box behind it is only about 2 inches wide, which is roughly the width of a hummingbird nest itself. Fitraho’s listing suggests hanging the house near a feeder so hummingbirds “get familiar with it,” and concedes they “may not always nest inside.” BESWORLDS goes further and calls its product a “decorative house” with “no guarantee” of use. The woven grass huts are a different product. They’re sold as roosting pockets for small songbirds, and “hummingbird” is mostly in the title for search traffic.

None of this makes them bad garden ornaments. A $9-$21 wooden house with a red ribbon is a fine gift for someone who likes hummingbirds. Just don’t expect a hummingbird to move in, and don’t count it as habitat.

The differences go beyond size. A hummingbird nest is built to stretch. Cornell Lab says the female stamps the base to stiffen it, but “the walls remain pliable, allowing it to stretch as the chicks grow,” and Audubon’s field guide notes the same thing. A rigid wooden box can’t do that. The nest also sits directly on top of a branch, where the female can see out and fly straight up. Cornell Lab says Ruby-throated Hummingbirds have even built on loops of chain, wire, and extension cords, which is about as close as a hummingbird gets to using human hardware. What they need from you is a branch, materials, and food, not a roof.

The timeline is short. Ruby-throated Hummingbirds lay 1 to 3 eggs, incubate them for 12 to 14 days, and the young leave the nest 18 to 22 days after hatching, per Cornell Lab. Anna’s Hummingbirds incubate for about 16 days and can raise 2 to 3 broods a year.

  • A coated wire cage pre-filled with soft nesting fiber. Songbird Essentials says the 1.5-inch grid lets birds pull material out easily and helps it dry faster after rain.
  • Recommended by name by the International Hummingbird Society, which calls it "a practical nesting material."
  • Goldfinches, titmice, and other small birds also use it, according to the maker.

This is the one product built around what hummingbirds actually do. The International Hummingbird Society says placing nesting material near a feeder “may attract female hummingbirds to nest near you” during the 5 to 7 weeks they’re building, brooding, and feeding young. Hang the cage in spring, before the first females return, within sight of your feeder. Two caveats. Songbird Essentials doesn’t say what the fiber is made of on its product pages, and its description says the material replaces “spider webs and lichen in lining the tiny nests.” That’s not quite how the nests are built. Audubon says the lining is soft plant down, while lichen goes on the outside as camouflage, so think of Hummer Helper as a supplement to natural materials, not a replacement. For other species, our best bird nesting material guide covers alpaca and coco fiber options, plus the materials Audubon and NestWatch say to avoid, like dryer lint and long yarn.

2. A hummingbird swing — Best for Holding a Territorial Male Nearby

A hummingbird swing doesn’t help with nesting directly, but it gives birds somewhere to perch near the feeder. Cornell Lab notes that Ruby-throated Hummingbirds often “sit on a small twig keeping a lookout,” and that males aggressively defend flowers and feeders. A swing placed in sight of the feeder gives a guarding male a lookout post and gives you a reliable view of him. Our best hummingbird swing guide ranks the Perky-Pet Copper Beaded swing first.

3. A nectar feeder close to good nesting trees

Anna’s Hummingbirds usually nest near a source of nectar, according to Cornell Lab, and the Hummingbird Society ties nesting material to feeders for the same reason. A clean feeder near trees with slender branches gives a female food within a short flight of a nest site. The Aspects HummZinger HighView tops our best hummingbird feeder roundup. Change the nectar every few days in summer heat.

4. Plants and a “messy” yard (free)

The best hummingbird nesting supplies grow in your yard. Audubon’s guide to attracting hummingbirds recommends cinnamon fern, which has fuzzy stems, and pussy willow, which has fuzzy flowers, and says that if your yard already has thistle and dandelion, you should “allow some to remain” because “their fluffy seeds provide nesting material.” Audubon also says to favor native plants and avoid pesticides. Spider silk is the glue that holds a hummingbird nest together, per Cornell Lab, so a yard sprayed for insects loses one of the two main building materials. NestWatch’s landscaping advice points the same way: native trees and shrubs, and a yard left “a bit messy” in the fall. Our how to attract hummingbirds guide lists the tubular native flowers that feed them, too.

5. A real wren or chickadee box, if you want a house that gets used

If what you really want is a small birdhouse with residents, buy one built to NestWatch’s spec. A House Wren box needs a 1-inch hole and a 5 1/2 x 5 1/2-inch floor 8 inches deep, mounted 5 to 10 feet up, and a chickadee box is the same size with a 1 1/8-inch hole. Coveside’s Hanging Wren House ($46.99) and Kingsyard’s cedar wren house ($19.99) both have 1-inch holes, and Nature’s Way’s CWH1 ($19.99) has a 1 1/8-inch hole for wrens or chickadees. See our best wren house and best chickadee nest box guides.

Can you buy a real hummingbird nest?

No. Anything sold as a “hummingbird nest” is a replica or a craft item. The Migratory Bird Treaty Act makes it unlawful to “possess, offer for sale, sell” any migratory bird or “any part, nest, or egg of any such bird” without a permit (16 U.S.C. 703), and the US Fish and Wildlife Service’s 2023 list of protected birds includes both the Ruby-throated Hummingbird and Anna’s Hummingbird. NestWatch says the same rule covers nests, eggs, and feathers of any native bird. The International Hummingbird Society’s advice is simple: “Leave a nest in place.” It also notes that hummingbird nests “are often re-used, wholly or in part,” so an empty nest left on the branch may get used again next year.

If you find a nest in your yard, the best thing you can do is keep your distance, keep cats indoors, and hold off on pruning that tree or shrub until the young have left.

The bottom line

Skip the hummingbird house if you’re hoping to host a nest. Hummingbirds build tiny open cups on branches, about 1.5 to 2 inches across, and every reputable source we checked, from the International Hummingbird Society to Cornell Lab’s NestWatch, says they don’t use birdhouses. The wooden houses on Amazon are decorations with a wren-sized hole, and even their sellers hedge on whether anything will move in. Spend the money on Songbird Essentials’ Hummer Helper ($15.99) instead, hang it near a clean nectar feeder and a perch, and let some thistle, dandelion, and fuzzy-stemmed ferns grow. If you want a small house with real tenants, a 1-inch-hole wren box built to NestWatch’s spec will get one far more often.
